Want to Start a Fashion Business or Be a Fashion Designer? Remember the words "baby steps"...

Oh how I have missed blogging!  To be honest, I have not totally stopped! I do most of my blogging on Instagram now and my goodness we do have some healthy conversations up in there.  So I find it easier to just post and start a discussion.  I had one just a few days ago and with the feedback I got, I just thought wow!  Means a lot of people out there are in this position and perhaps this will help them  So why not also put this up on the blog!  After all some people out there who are not following us on Instagram and Facebook can still be encouraged by this story!

I am putting it up exactly how I put it up on Instagram.  Short and to the point!  Hopefully it will help you as well if you are currently in this situation.  So here goes!

Accounting for Fashion Businesses - our 3-Day Fashion Entrepreneurship Course LIVE on Facebook! Starts 25 Nov. 2017 @ 7pm!

We are wrapping up on 2017!  Time to review our business performance so far and start planning for 2018!  But how do we do this if we don't even know what our figures are like?

Yes!  I know!  We designers hate figures and numbers!  All we want to do is design all day!  But remember that the minute you decide to start a business, you move from being a designer to an entrepreneur!  And as entrepreneur, you must keep your eyes on the figures. In totality!  Not just the inflows into the account!  Why?!  So we can make smart business decisions, know the true position of our business and best of all, be able to use this year as a yard stick for the next year to improve our profits.

So how do we do this?!  With an accounting software!  And THAT's exactly what we will be teaching in our upcoming Course which is happening LIVE on Facebook!  Our previous Facebook Courses have been SUCH a success and we cannot wait to do more!

Just imagine 3 whole days learning accounting right from the comfort of your home! You can register wherever you are and we will teach you the best way we know how... FROM SCRATCH!

Just check out this video.  If you can't see the video, click on this link

So what will we be learning?  I'll tell you just now!

If you missed it, you missed out!  We discussed real scenarios with designers asking questions and funny enough we went way beyond Costing and Pricing.  In fact that was just a tiny portion of the Course.  We focused more on HOW TO SELL! It was tres fab! BUT not to worry.  You can still register for it.  The video is still available.  Not the same feeling as the live training but just as good.

Coming up next is our next topic in the series - HOW TO START YOUR CLOTHING LINE!

Design, Fashion Illustration & Computer-Aided Design Course - Last Stream for 2017 starts 21st & 24th October, 2017

And now for the first of my marathon blogging sessions.  Yes yes!  And naturally, I would talk about our Design, Fashion Illustration & Computer-Aided Design Course because it comes first. :-D Oh how I LOVE this flyer! Very striking illustration right?!  Yes it is! :-D

So we just concluded another Stream of our Design, Fashion Illustration & CAD Course. It was pretty hectic and it was a lot of work - BUT we aced it!  It was a pretty packed class and somehow we managed to get a lot of people in a somewhat small space. Lol.  And mega thanks to our participants who came in from Ibadan & Abuja!  Wow!  It is always a humbling experience for us when people come in from far for any of our trainings. And even those in Lagos who come from far and near, please know that we do NOT take it for granted at all!  God bless you all LOADS!

Okies... so about our next Stream coming up on the 21st & 24th of October, 2017.  It is literally 3 courses in 1 and it is ALL ABOUT CREATIVITY!!!

Facebook Webinar, Fashion Illustration Course, Business & Accounting Course - FAB courses this Q4 2017 at Martwayne

Hello, hello HELLO!!!  Apologies for my LONG silence.  I took a long but well-deserved break from a lot of things - including blogging but I have been really active on Instagram though.  Funny, I seem to prefer Instagram since there is a lot more engagement on my posts than on the blog but hey... keeping the website alive is also important right?!  I think I'll write on what we have been discussing on Instagram later.  Right now, let's get you up to speed on the next Courses we have this Q4 2017 at Martwayne!

I'll leave the flyers here for now.  I will run a Course on each flyer in different posts. If you get our emails, this will drop right into your box!  Don't be overwhelmed.  I plan to do some serious marathon blogging so watch this space! :-D

Learn Childrenswear at Martwayne. Start Date: 12 September 2017

Yes yes!  Here's introducing yet another brand spanking new Course at Martwayne. Our Short Course in Childrenswear!  And why childrenswear?!  Well.... we have had requests from people who are only interested in starting a clothing line for young children.  Of course we know there is a HUGE market out there for childrenswear.  Why?!  Because new babies are born, young children grow bigger with age (unlike me and a lot of ladies out there who can still fit into clothes they had 15 years ago! lol) and of course with an increase in age comes a new wardrobe.  So we thought to ourselves, why force students to go through our ladieswear Course when they can simply focus on the area they are most interested in!  And voila!  Our Childrenswear Course was born! :-D

So how does the Course run you ask?!  It's pretty simple...

We had a great show today on 98.9 Kiss FM Lagos...

Hello!!!!  Oh wow!  We had SUCH a great show today!  It was actually sparked off by a rant on Instagram about why fashion designers refuse to collaborate with each other.  If you missed the conversation trail, you should join us on Instagram @martwayne and air your views as well!

Then I watched another video I was tagged on where the speaker was talking about how businesses just live on survival mode and it further reinforced the the discussion I had yesterday.  But the truth is we don't even specialize in certain areas so how can we even collaborate?!  And that was what I chose to talk about today!

If you missed it, simply click on this link:

Martwayne partners with Access Bank on our popular sewing class for kids on holidays - the Basic Fashion Course for Juniors (ages 9-16)

Yaye!!!!!!  Hello good people :-D  And in an exciting twist, we just sealed our collaboration with Access Bank to run the Basic Fashion Course for Juniors (ages 9-16) this year!!!  Whoop!  Whoop!

So yes!  This year, our young fashionistas will not only learn about fashion and how to sew, they will also learn about financial management and the value of money in fun games facilitated by the Children's Banking Unit of Access Bank!  I can tell you it will be really exciting.  I tell you, even we the adults need these lessons.  And there is no better time to train our leaders of tomorrow about the value of money and hard work than today!

Okies!  So let me quickly tell you about the Course!

And we were live on Facebook :-D Enjoy the live feed of Martwayne on 98.9 Kiss FM Lagos on 7 July 2017

Yes we were!  Actually to be honest, this is the 2nd week we have been live on both Facebook and Instagram.  I haven't posted the one that happened 2 weeks ago.  I'll do that sometime this week.

Why did we decide on live feeds?!  Well we realized people may not be able to tune into the show on 98.9 Kiss FM perhaps because of work or the fact that they may be outside Lagos so we brought the show to them through other means!  And I kid you not, the response has been great!  So soon enough, we will also be live on Youtube once I get the settings right!  :-D

SO what did we discuss last week?!

Want to cut your production time in half? Then ditch the paper and pencils and go digital!

This picture made me laugh when I saw it!  But yes!  We tailors now use laptops!  :-D I spoke about it on our radio show on 98.9 Kiss FM on Friday and you should watch it!  I tell you this is the way to go!

Ok... so I realized that whilst promoting this Course (and I must confess, I don't think I really promoted it that much), I never really spoke about the benefits of the Course.  So you are probably thinking... "why go digital when I can use my pencil and paper" right?

Ok... check out this scenario...

Invest in Yourself ! Martwayne on Business Africa, 98.9 Kiss FM Lagos - 23 June 2017

Hello good people!!!  Trust you had a GREAT holiday!  Happy Eid to all our Muslim friends and family.  The LOOOONG weekend was a truly welcome one - though I must confess I did not do much resting.  I worked right through - thanks to our clothing factory.  It has been extremely overwhelming but I so cannot complain. At least the designers we have produced for are happy with our work and for that I am thankful!

Anyway...  I have not posted anything in 2 weeks so this is a double post alert :-D

Hello May!!! It's Picture Time!!! Enjoy pictures from our Q1 2017 Fashion Courses: Fashion Illustration, Corsetry, Textile Design & other stuff we've been up to at Martwayne! :-D

HELLO Good People!!!!!!!  Gosh it has been AGES since I was here!  So let me catch up on all the greetings I have missed out on.  Happy belated new quarter!  Happy belated Good Friday!  Happy belated Easter!  Happy belated Workers Day!  And the latest one... Happy Belated New Month lol!  And of course Happy Happy HAPPY belated BIRTHDAY to all my fabulous people out there!  I am sure you all had great holidays and even greater birthdays!  I know we did at Martwayne! :-D

SO!  What we have been up to since my last post (insert-covering-my-face-emoticon-in-here).  No excuses really!  As I type this, I'm thinking to myself that there has to be some app out there that just types away while I talk right?!  There just has to be an easier way to blog.... I really have to explore that option.  So yeah!  That's my excuse!

Okies you have missed a lot yes but not to worry!  I am here to catch you up in one single post!  We will do more of pictures but of course we still have to do a teeny weeny bit of writing for the benefit of those just coming into contact with us for the first time.  Besides... let me confess... I just lost about 3 hours of this same blog post which just disappeared so really I am just oh-so-happy with just pictures and tiny writing right now...

SO!  What do we start of with?!

YES! First!  First!!  First!!!  We'll start off with this AMAZING testimonial from one of us at Martwayne.  Whoop!  Whoop!  You know how much we love testimonials! :-D

Learn How to Sew Corsets @ Martwayne. Register for our new Short Course in Corsetry. Perfect for bridal wear designers!

And this is the last of our newest courses [at least for now :-D] and this was strictly based on demand.  We had been getting requests for this and after a lady placed yet another request for this early this year, I thought to myself - sure why not?!  And here it is - our Short Course in Corsetry! :-D

Oh how I love corsets!  The structure, the fit - pretty much everything about it!  A well built corset is just amazing and of all the things I learnt in fashion school, this was no doubt one of my favorites!

SO just a quick one to tell you all about the Course even though the flyer pretty much has all the details...

Learn Textile Design (Manual & Digital using CAD) @ Martwayne in our brand spanking new Short Course in Textile Design.

Yes!  Our 2nd Creative Course this February!  And I am sooooo excited about it and truth be told, We have been planning this for A WHILE!  This will definitely set you apart from every other designer!  It doesn't get much better than this right?!  We all know what the constraints in our local market is in terms of fabrics and prints so why get stuck using the limited fabrics in the local market when you can simply create your own prints!  And I tell you, this is a RICH curriculum, it would be really really sad if you let this opportunity pass you by!

Learn Fashion Design, Fashion Illustration & Computer-Aided Design this February @ Martwayne and take your love for fashion to the next level!

This month, we are teaching the CREATIVE side of fashion and our first and really popular course is the Design, Fashion Illustration with Computer-Aided Design Course.  This Course is perfect for you if you love fashion and want to explore your inner creativity.

-  Have you always wondered how people come up with the most amazing designs?

OR

-  Do you have all these awesome ideas but just cannot seem to put them on paper?

OR

- Maybe you are tired of copying people's designs and want to come up with yours so people can patronize your work.

OR worse...

- Your tailors keep wrecking your ideas because no matter how much you "explain" it to them, they just cannot seem to get it?!

OR

-  You keep getting cut out of the final shortlist of candidates in that fashion competition because your fashion sketches were not up to par.

If you fall into any of these categories (and trust me, the list is even longer than this), then this Course is for you!  This Course focuses on the real ART of fashion design!  Yes!  This is where the work really is!

Do you need a job?! Then grab this opportunity to start a career in clothing manufacturing / the fashion industry!

Hello good people!!! It has been a VERY BUSY start to the year!!!  Yes we started off our Beginners Course on Monday for the weekday option.  The weekend option starts on Saturday at 2pm.  The Bodices & Dressmaking Course kicked off today, though more people will be joining us next week so you can still register.  And we are working on one or two more Courses coming up for which I have received a request.  So yes it has been busy!

BUT this is a project I have been on for years now (since 2012 to be precise) though I never actually publicized it since I wanted to kind of test the concept first before going into it full time.  We have been all over trying to search for machinists to place with fashion designers.  I'm sure some of you may have heard me say a few times about going into the middle of Lagos Island to find people who could sew but did not have jobs so we could get them jobs with fashion designers.  And over the months, we have placed tailors who have reached out to us with designers who needed them.

Has it been a breeze?!  Of course not!  After testing them in-house, there were a lot of issues BOTH with the designers and the machinists themselves.  I'm sure you must have remembered my posts "A Passionate Plea to Fashion Designers" Part 1 & Part 2 .  You can click on the links to read them and gosh it has NOT been easy!

Yes we have faced a lot of issues and we realized we needed to change our strategy if we really want this to work.

https://max-media.imgix.net/transfers/2016/8/3/d42fdd689d2d5624d4177a98068db8ebdf1bc9ae.gif

Happy New Year again everyone!!!!!!  I'm sure we had a great break!  I know I did.  BUT like everything else, all great things must somehow come to an end. So the holidays are now over and we are all back at work! :-( :-( :-(

Well actually no not really... We, at Martwayne, are still on break :-D BUT not for long!  But we'll soon be back in no time!  Work fully begins in-house on Friday the 6th!

Here are the start dates for our fashion courses:

Sunday, January 1, 2017

Why a New Year is always a big deal + Happy New Year!!!!! Welcome to 2017!

https://www.happynewyears2017.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Happy-New-Year-2017-WhatsApp-Dp.png

YES!!!!!  We made it!!!  Happy New Year People!!!!!!  The much anticipated New Year is finally here!!! :-D  2016 was hectic!  3 sisters got married, my mum and dad both hit milestone ages and of course you know what that means and my sister had a baby!  Add that to the many trips we had to make + it was a pretty exhausting year! I was one of those looking forward to a new one so I could start kick off my new projects.

Oh... I had amazing fun at the crossover service last night.  Ron Kenoly was in the house!!!!!!!!  Yaye!!!  AND he came specially for me because he played MY FAVOURITE songs of all time, I was mighty pleased!  I danced so hard my husband had to remind me I was not in a club!  Those dance moves I did not know I even had just came out of me!  Yah I had a great time!

And the minute the countdown ended and everyone yelled Happy New Year, the first thing that came to my mind was "Wow!  I will be a year older in a few Sundays from now" (yeah... my birthday always falls on the same day as the previous Christmas and New Year's Day) and that thought hit me with mixed feelings.  And suddenly it clicked!  Now I know why a new year is always a big deal!
