Martwayne | Power Through Fashion: The Foundation Course in Fashion Design

The Foundation Course in Fashion Design

The Martwayne Foundation Course in Fashion Design (MFC) is targeted at aspiring and practising designers / entrepreneurs.  It teaches the creative, the sewing as well as the business sides of fashion for those who would like to start a fashion business.

The Martwayne Foundation Course in Fashion Design is a combination of 6 Short Courses - made up of 5 Sewing Courses & 1 Creative Course.  It is perfect for beginners with no prior knowledge of sewing who want to learn the creative, the practical and the business sides of fashion.

All classes officially start at 12 noon and typically end at 5pm.  What this means is, if I or any facilitator needs to have a class, it will be anytime from 12.  Students may, however, come in from 10am to catch up on missed work.

Please note we are closed on public holidays.

A New Development:

Weekday students who wish to complete all the Courses in a shorter period of time may choose to run 2 courses at the same time, depending on our Course timetable.    Please contact us if you are interested in this option.

Please note, however, that the Courses are run on a strict time table and all work and assignments must be submitted at the scheduled time.

Will I Learn How to Sew?:

The Course is predominantly a practical course so it teaches pattern drafting and how to sew.  However, there is another aspect of the Course which teaches the design and production process, how to develop your designs from scratch using themes and tools of the design process, the documentation required in a fashion business, how to charge for your clothes, etc.  Most of these are covered in the Design and Illustration Course (with Computer Aided Design)

Because it gives a rounded view of what it takes to start a fashion business, students are taught vital principles through lectures, assignments and projects that will enable them think for themselves, make their own decisions, and learn as they move up the different Courses from their experiences.

We pride ourselves on teaching people to become designers and business owners.  We, therefore, expect that from the end of the Beginners Course, students begin to recognize who they are as designers, utilize the knowledge gained and test the principles taught at the end of each Short Course, sew for people, learn from their practical experiences, charge appropriately for their work and most of all, learn how to deal with their clients professionally without shortchanging themselves.

At the end of the Course, students would have learnt enough about the process right from concept to completion to enable them put their knowledge to practice, even if on a small scale and build their businesses from there.
